Domestic embroidery and beadwork was less sophisticated than that produced by workshops, although by the standards of today beautifully accomplished. The Lady's Magazine included patterns for pockets and purses from the 1770s, which could be attached to ready-made, top-closing metal frames, many of pinchbeck, an imitation gold, or other metals. One side of this purse has a figure in classical dress seated on a couch with a globe and dividers, the other has a figure holding a parrot.
