Dexterity puzzles, generally made for a solitary player, are at least as old as Charles Crandall's 1889 Pigs in Clover. A simple ball maze with cardboard design, Pigs in Clover created a brief toy fad in the late 19th century. Since that time small dexterity puzzles became commonplace. During the middle and later half of the 20th century, makers utilized plastic more and more for toy and puzzle production. Giant Plastics Corp. of New York produced Around the World Puzzles in the 1950s, adding clever printed cardboard packaging to help promote the product.
