Pyohaerok is a book written by a Jeju man named Jang Han-cheol (1744~?) who came across a storm on his way to the capital for a state examination and drifted off to a Ho-san island which is one of the Okinawa Islands today, and then to other islands. His luck, however, sent him back home and made him write about his adventure. Written in the first-person diary style, the book is a fine literary work about personal experience and contains a wealth of geographic and maritime information about the sea of Korea and its vicinity such as sea routes, ocean currents and seasonal winds, etc.
