This fan panel had one side coated with gold powder and then inscribed with the running-script calligraphy by Wang Gong, together with the calligrapher’s signature “for Baoda my brother, by Gong” and his square name seal of “Wang Gong” as well as another seal of “happiness and longevity”.
Wang Gong, alias Gongshou and Zhuping, born in Xiuning of Anhui province but settled in Suzhou, excelled in music and calligraphy, especially in running and standard scripts. He was significantly influenced by the styles of well-known Qing-dynasty calligraphers Liang Tongshu and Wang Wenqia, and was good friends with another calligrapher of his time Cheng Tangyou.
