Sumiyoshi Hiromori (1707-77) learned painting at the Tosa school and became a purveying painter to the regime from 1734 until his retirement in 1773.
Quails as a painting subject were a specialty of the Tosa School. Quails with autumn flowers was a favorite subject of the Tosa school. In this painting, Hiromori also depicts quails with bush clover, ears of millet and wild chrysanthemums in great detail.
