Mezzotint engravers working in London at the time were dominated by a group of Irish artists. Of this ‘Dublin Group’, as they came to be called, McArdell was the leading figure of his generation. A keen businessman, McArdell published many of his own plates (such as this one), although this did little to stop pirated copies from being sold by unscrupulous print-sellers.
