Quinta da Boavista

Photograph of a section of Quinta da Boavista. It is a property on the north bank of the Douro River, by the mouth of the Covas stream and next to Quinta das Sopas. The nearest village is Chanceleiros, from where the access path starts, which crosses the entire property to the river and the railroad. The structure of the buildings of the estate is traditional, consisting of the owner's house, wine cellar, winery, among other constructions.
Several portions of vineyards in post-phylloxera terraces are preserved, whose walls stand out for their monumentality, excellent construction and scenic value, reaching almost 6 meters in height on the banks of the Covas stream.
The landscape patchwork also includes several areas of "mortório", recolonized by olive trees and native vegetation, as well as orchards and walled vegetable gardens. Also worthy of mention is the path that gives access to the river and the railroad, a "barrel-roller" whose pavement is made of schist applied vertically.
The history of this estate is associated with the figure of the Baron Forrester, who marked it on his maps. The estate was acquired by his heirs and partners of the firm «Offley, Webber & Forrester», in 1866, to the Baron of Viamonte. Throughout the 20th century it had several owners, being again acquired by «Forrester» in 1979, a firm later bought by Sogrape Vinhos (1995). In 2014 the property was purchased by Lima & Smith Lda.
