Peso da Régua, Portugal

Photograph of a section of Quinta do Noval. It is an estate located on the left bank of the Pinhão River, next to the village of Vale de Mendiz. Its records go back to the 18th century, when it was included in the Demarcation by Pombal, being owned by Domingos Francisco Guimarães, a deputy of the Company. In the beginning of the 19th century it was acquired by José Maria Rebelo Valente, who made important investments on it. In the late 19th century, with the phylloxera crisis, it passed to the hands of António José da Silva Júnior. Since 1993 it belongs to the international wine group AXA Millésimes. In addition to the vineyard, it presents an area of wood and mortório recolonized by native vegetation on the hillside of Orgueiras. On this estate that is cut by the national road stands out the access to the central nucleus, marked by trellised vines. It preserves an extensive area of post-phylloxera terraces, of distinctive quality of construction and design. The paths of the vineyard and the stairs are marked with whitewash to be visible during the harvest. In the plots above the main nucleus, where the walls reach a larger dimension, the water drainage system stands out both for its constructive quality and for its state of conservation. The estate retains several interesting structures, such as the traditional olive press.
