Inscribed as a World Heritage Site in June 2018, the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles are a 66.34 hectares’ collection of 92 buildings of 4 different architectural styles – Victorian Gothic, Indo Saracenic, Neo Classical and Art Deco, of which 76 are Deco. The 22 acre Oval Maidan (Park) is straddled by contrasting styles of buildings from the 19th century Victorian Gothic on its east, and 20th century Art Deco on its west, representing two different waves of urban expansion. The imposing Gothic public buildings are recognised as the finest and most cohesive group of Victorian Gothic buildings in the world, while the buildings on the western side are the earliest expression of modernism in the city and are unique for the UNESCO recognition accorded to modern living heritage.
