Abanindranath Tagore (1871-1951) was an influential painter and writer. As the first major exponent of Swadeshi values in Indian art, he is accredited with founding the influential Bengal School of Art which created the first modernist vibrations in twentieth century India. His art is often described as idyllic, mystical, profound and deeply rooted in the prevailing sentiments of his time.
