From the Artist: Taking a much-needed break from remote schooling madness, I decided to turn my lifelong love of painting from hobby to business once the pandemic hit, founding Marla Beth Designs. When things shut down last March, I felt very helpless, especially as a parent. We were all figuring out how to cope on the fly and I realized my mechanism was to sort out my feelings through painting. “Rainbow Connection” (36 X 48) was born out of a renewed need to feel at peace and productive again. It has become my very own ‘rainbow’ lining of quarantine. The acrylics flow intuitively, forming cascading organic drips in vivid hues that, to me, evoke happiness, optimism and positivity. Described as equal parts whimsy and sophistication, my art is often inspired by the imaginative minds of children. Witnessing my 11-year old son’s ability to pivot, adapt, and demonstrate absolute resilience in the past year has driven me to do the same. Like so many children today, he faced many life changes as a result of COVID-19 – and has handled them all so seamlessly. Paintings like “Rainbow Connection” are what I like to call ‘happy art.’ They’re designed to bring us together at a time when division is all around us. Some things can still be simple and pure. The innocence we once enjoyed as children may feel far away and lost, but if my work can be a reminder of a time that was happy and carefree – that’s what I’d like to contribute to the world.
