Ramón y Cajal during his military service in Cuba

Cajal became a doctor in the Spanish Army when he finished his studies, and was posted to Cuba. He was there for just under 2 years, as he soon contracted malaria and had to return to Spain. His health was blighted by this illness for the rest of his life.
