New Delhi , India

This miniature portrays Rama's encounter with Parashurama midway when he along with Sita and Lakshmana are on his way to Ayodhya. They are travelling on an elephant and a chariot. No sooner Rama sees Parashurama arriving towards them, he then gets down of his elephant and bows to Parashurama in respect. Rama, a young boy, is still dressed in his wedding attire, humbly paying homage to the great angry sage. Dressed in a yellow 'jama' (upper body garment or robe), he is shown carrying his bow and arrow and is accompanied by an attendant Seated on a chariot drawn by two white horses, also wearing her wedding attire is the newly wedded Sita. She seems anxious about the well being of her husband, Rama. An elephant with a mahout and a rider carrying a flag is the mount of Rama. The two, Sita and Rama, seem to move ahead of the rest of the wedding procession. This painting with prominence of folk elements was possibly made by a folk artist, it has a colophon dating the set to 1699 C.E., the period of Maharana Amar Singh II.
