Rasa Lila

Kshitindranath Majumdar20th century

National Gallery of Modern Art

National Gallery of Modern Art
New Delhi, India

A distinguished artist of the Bengal School, Kshitindranath Majumdar’s paintings were marked by a strong note of lyricism. While his subjects were drawn from literary, religious or other narrative traditions, his lines were delicate, supple and sinuous and sometimes seemed inspired by the art nouveau style.

A follower of the Krishna cult, Majumdar brings a magical intensity and passion to his subject. As in ‘RasaLila’ the figures are seen swaying in an ecstatic dance, creating a mesmerizing effect. The handling of colour and lines, clearly shows Majumdar echoing the language of the miniatures.
