With her husband and creative partner, Charles Eames, Ray Eames (1912-1988) revolutionized design, from furniture to film, exhibit and architecture.
It was a plywood chair that first gained them international attention. They were experimenting with bending plywood when the U.S. Navy commissioned them to create a lightweight leg splint for injured sailors. With access to military technology, the couple perfected their molding process and later applied it to furniture. Their simple chair is still produced. The Eameses became known for high-quality products that could be made at reasonable cost.
