Designer Statement:
This is a replica of my prom dress. I used the attention of prom as a chance to prove a point to my community, that beauty can be self-defined and that cleavage can be powerful. Using striking red and a print with true sentimental value, would surely catch their eyes. The European 17th century cinched waist and billowy skirt combined with African print visually tells the story of colonization and its affect on the identity of African people. This dress was to bridge the gap between native-born Africans and Africans born in America. The message resonated with so many people, pictures of the dress went viral with the hashtag #KyeBreakTheInternet
