Red Silk Ceremonial Fan

Joseon Dynasty

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

This circular fan was used for ceremonies. Multiple layers of paper were initially attached on a frame, then red silk was further adhered, with full blossoms painted along the edges. Flower vines in two identical circles are also painted on the left and right sides. The circular fan with a flower painting originates from the red flower fan of the divine Chinese emperor. Painted red silk fans were gradually replaced with embroidered ones.
