Refractometers began to be used with great frequency from the second half of s. XIX in laboratories and industrial processes. This model, described in 1888 by the physicist Carl Pulfricht (1858-1927), serves to measure the refractive index of liquids at different temperatures, which is achieved by a stream of water that circulates through the tube containing the sample.
