Although he never attributed to himself the invention of the centrifugal regulator, the first system was developed by James Watt in 1788 at the suggestion of his partner Matthew Boulton. It was like a pendulum with two masses suspended by two articulated arms and it was the last serie of innovations that Watt introduced for steam engines.
