Description: In 1879, Joris-Karl Huysmans asked his friend Jean-Louis Forain to illustrate his naturalistic novel Marthe, the story of a prostitute in contemporary Paris. Forain, taking the subject into consideration, chose to portray the title character in a brazen and provocative pose that was ultimately refused by the publisher, who judged it too indecent for publication.
