The relief belongs to an illustration from the mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahri and depicts a row of running soldiers, who are participating in a procession. They are armed with axes and throwing sticks and are holding olive branches. One of them carries a flag with two adorned horses, which indicates the company of the group.
These pictures portray festive processions. Royal ceremonial ships cross the Nile. The parade of the royal guard includes not only Egyptian soldiers with delicate ceremonial axes and olive branches but also elite Nubian troops armed with bows and arrows who are clearly distinguishable from the Egyptians by virtue of their darker skin colour and their characteristic facial features.
