Remains of a shield boss

7th century A. D.

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

This object was part of grave goods that were found in the burial in 1906, during construction works in the courtyard of the Miniscalchi palace, in via S. Mammaso 8, Verona. It was completely recovered, even if the position of the objects on the body of the deceased was not recorded. This is a "parade" shield boss; it has been suggested that at the beginning of the 7th century this typology of shield boss presented a more refined decoration with a more limited number of shapes, while during the 7th century the formal variety would have been at the expense of quality.
