Even in the Middle Ages, many people lived on, from, and with the water. Goods were often transported by ship. In 1980 the remains of a small 15th-century ship were found near Hellendoorn. It proved to be roughly half of a punter, a boat used primarily for river transport. Three posts stood in the ground beside it, probably remnants of a landing stage in the small river De Regge. The maritime archaeology department of the Cultural Heritage Agency has conserved and documented the punter’s remains, and reassembled them especially for this museum department.
