Republican-China Tortoiseshell-shaped Scissors Picture 1

Hangzhou, China

This is a pair of ornamental scissors given its small size and cute form. Looking like a tortoise, the scissors are covered with a “tortoiseshell” on the back, with the exposed components resembling the head and limbs of the tortoise. What’s covered in the “tortoiseshell” is a complete pair of leverage scissors, a variety of scissors that enjoyed popularity in the Song dynasty (960-1279 AD). A narrow rectangular iron strip passing through the middle of the scissors fastens the finger bows, which thus cannot be opened. Both the “tortoiseshell” and finger bows have been polished, showing the meticulous craftsmanship.
