A sheet from the series “The Life of Mary (Life of the Virgin)” consisting of 20 sheets in woodcut technique created from 1500 to 1511 and published in 1511. The engravings from this series represent the author’s peaceful, secular ideal. The artist gave the personages the features of his contemporaries and moved the action of a number of engravings in the real situation of Germany in the 16th century. Calm, narrative story is in complete harmony with the artistic techniques of the master. Durer does not use contrasts of black and white anymore, he prefers to work with a stroke, achieving the softness of transitions. It was after “The Life of Mary” that Dürer gained international fame as a wood engraver.
