Events from Resurrection, Anastasis and Liturgical Feasts

The Anastasis, the harrowing of hell, refers to the Ascension of Christ after His descent into this realm of the dead to bring the souls of the righteous ones to heaven. This belief has a pagan, Egyptian and Greek origin, identifying the Limbo with the representation of a river from which the righteous are rescued. This iconography originates in Byzantine art and in this particular case it is not representative of Eastern iconography in which the Anastasis replaces the Resurrection, but, following the Western tradition, both episodes coexist.
