Some of the first commercially produced wool-work patterns originated from Berlin manufacturers, including L. Wittich and Phillison. These mass-produced patterns were widely available across Europe and the simple designs could be quickly and easily worked up into finished canvases to be made into purses. The designs became known as Berlin wool-work and were particularly fashionable from the 1840s until the 1870s.
