At the bottom: floor, vegetation and piece of wood. In the background on the left are soldiers and several white tents, one of which has the imperial flag on top. Signature in the lower left corner: J. Courtoiz. The portrayed is Manuel Luís Osório (Conceição do Arroio/RS, May 10, 1808 – Rio de Janeiro/RJ, October 4, 1879), the Marquis of Herval, patron of the Cavalry of the Brazilian Army.
