Reverse Glass Portrait of George Washington

The technique of painting on glass seems to have been introduced to China by the Jesuit priests, especially Father Castiglione, around 1715. The earliest Chinese reverse glass paintings generally consisted of Chinese subject matter and examples of this type have been dated to at least the 1760s.
