Oval-shaped canvas depicting, in the foreground, dark green sea with two small boats arriving at the pier. In the center, a fountain flanked by a staircase. In the background, there are several regiments lined up on the four sides of the square, and, composing the environment, several public and religious buildings with flags raised. In the center, a group of distinguished men and priests observe and receive the tributes of the regiments. Popular people attend the ceremony. Blue sky with white clouds. Golden wood frame.
This painting depicts Largo do Paço (Rio de Janeiro) on a feast day, with trained troops and the presence of noble, ecclesiastical and military personalities, as well as locals. On the left, in front of the main façade of the former Palace of the Vice-Kings, later, Paço Imperial, the Regiment; in front of the side façade, the new Regiment of Rio shows its weapons. In the background, in front of the Convento do Carmo, the Church of Antiga Sé and the Church of Ordem 3ª do Carmo, aligns the Moura Regiment, whose name went to the square where his barracks was. On the right, in front of Arco do Teles, the second Militia Regiment of Santa Rita. In the foreground, the Fountain of Mestre Valentim, and with its back to the sea, the Artillery Regiment of Rio and the guard of the Viceroy.
The painting's authorship is attributed to Leandro Joaquim.
