This is a sheath decorated with Maki-e design representing the gold Gion-mamori crests and silver arabesque patterns on the gold aventurine lacquer surface. This type of Gion-mamori design was used by the 2nd lord, Tadashige. It has a rib pattern that is engraved on the surface at equal intervals. It is virtually impossible to apply such a sophisticated Maki-e design on the groove-lined base. This is a good example that the family crest was used as a refined decorative pattern.
