Relief with Gladiators

Baths of Diocletian

Baths of Diocletian
Roma, Italy

The relief depicts fights between gladiators on two superimposed levels. The inscription refers to the upper one and indicates the name of the gladiators, Scolasticus and Damascenus. The symbol of a cut circle indicates that Damascenus died in combat: it is in fact the Greek letter theta, beginning of the word thanatos, death. 3rd AD
