Queen Victoria enjoyed wearing opal jewellery and gifted them to friends and family members. This increased the stone's popularity across the country. This ring belonged to Mary Ann Evans who published fiction as George Eliot. In the 1859 novella The Lifted Veil, Eliot wrote 'the opal was my favourite stone, because it seems to blush and turn pale as if it had a soul'.
