Xu Mei, courtesy name Cairuo, pseudonym Huawu, born in Suzhou, is a painter in the early Qing dynasty. He mainly works at bird-and-flower painting, figure painting, as well as landscape painting. Thanks to his excellent techniques, he is chosen as a court painter, participating in several great works such as the Kangxi Emperor’s Southern Inspection Tour, and a series of Shunga paintings.
Regarding to this work, a combination of cranes, pine trees, the rising sun and waves represents longevity. This is a typical pattern in the court painting to celebrate on the birthday of an imperial member. A similar pattern also appears in the works of the Jesuit Painter Giuseppe Castiglione. Although it is an assigned artwork with the theme of longevity, we can figure out from the style that Xu not only inherits painting skills from masters in Song dynasty, but also pays great attention to details. Wherever in his painting, it is vivid and full of ancient tastes.
