Robert L. Vann (1879-1940) served as publisher and editor of The Pittsburgh Courier, making it into one of the leading African American weekly papers. A 1906 graduate of Western Pennsylvania University (now the University of Pittsburgh), Vann became the first African American to graduate from the university's school of law in 1909.
