Robert Mills was an architect who apprenticed under James Hoban, architect of the White House. Mills also was mentored by Thomas Jefferson, who invited him to study his architectural library and introduced him to Benjamin Latrobe. His major commissions of his include Monumental Church (1812-1817) in Richmond, the Washington Monument (1814-1842) in Baltimore, and the DC Washington Monument (1833-1855), Patent Office Building (1836-1840), Treasury Building (1836-1842), and Old Post Office Building (1839-1842).
