In the early 1960s, President John F. Kennedy challenged NASA to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. Americans embraced the space programs that hurled astronauts into space, and space exploration appeared in movies, books, television shows, and other forms of popular media. By the time Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon in July 1969, space-inspired toys were a staple of the toy chest.
