Charles Volkmar, Sr. was a German-born artist who had settled in Baltimore by the early 1840s. In August 1849, John Ridgely’s Memorandum Book records, “Pd. Charles Volkmar…$127.00,” probably for this large landscape view which appears to be set in Europe. While traveling in Paris a generation later, the Ridgelys also bought landscapes painted by Volkmar’s son, Charles Volkmar, Jr. These works were displayed in Hampton’s Music Room upon their return.
