National Academy of San Luca
Roma, Italy

The collection of the Gallery of the Academy of Saint Luke bears witness to almost five centuries of the history of the institution—among one of the oldest in Europe—with a particularly rich record of its most relevant and consistent activity over time: the education of painters, sculptors and architects, one that had in draftsmanship its essential foundation. This rich history prompted the decision to emphasize, in the current arrangement of the rooms, the didactic endeavour that has bonded the academic professors and their pupils, who in turn were not rarely destined to devote themselves to teaching alongside their artistic activity, for which they are more renowned.
The Room of Academic Teaching displays—under the watchful gaze of the masters looking out from their portraits on the wall—a selection of the very numerous essays of both famous and lesser known artists still preserved in the Academy. They were shown yearly, and, between eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, awarded in a public ceremony held in the Capitol at the end of the academic competitions.
