Known for his exquisite glass flower studies, Paul Stankard began making paperweights in the 1960s and developed a unique method of depicting the entire plant – from flower to roots – in extremely fine detail, such as what we see here. This work is from his Botanicals series of the 1980s which departed from the traditional spherical paperweight form, allowing the arrangement to be viewed from all sides, while also giving the work a more sculptural presence.
