These impressive pendants were made in Syria but found in Egypt. Only a few examples are known of this type of jewellery. Expert opinion is divided concerning the function of these richly decorated discs. They may have been intended to serve as pendants on a necklace. But it is striking that they have frequently been preserved in pairs. This suggests that they may have been earring pendants. The most plausible theory, however, is that they were ornamental pins attached to clothing: one on each shoulder, linked by a chain.
