'Rose' printed cotton

This pattern was designed by William Morris in 1883. It is a floral design with stylised roses and birds. This example was printed at Merton Abbey using the indigo discharge process sometime before 1940.

In the 1970s to 1990s this pattern was used to decorate the interiors of British nuclear submarines. It was featured on seat covers, armchairs and even curtains. The design was likely chosen as a symbol of British identity and to provide the naval officers operating the submarine with a link to the natural world.
