Royal Palanquin with Phoenix Design

Empire of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

This royal carriage is adorned with splendid phoenix designs. The canopy, door, and four sides of the main body are decorated with phoenix patterns, and even the short red curtains are gilded in the same patterns. On the octagonal top of the two-tiered canopy lies a mound of eight phoenixes wearing ornamental hairpins. Each side of the canopy is painted in cloud designs, and long tassels are attached to the phoenix decoration on the all four corners. The main body is composed of windows and a door. The front and side windows are lift-to-open types, while the front door is side-hinged. Porters used the handles on the poles to carry the palanquin. End of the poles are decorated with an ornamental phoenix head.
