The industrialist and philanthropist William Hesketh Lever built The Bungalow at Rivington in 1901. It was destroyed in 1913 in an arson attack by the suffragette Edith Rigby. Lever had it rebuilt in stone and used it as a place for entertaining with a circular ballroom, glass-roofed pergola and winter garden.
