This hat is more widely known as a tricorne, and from its earliest use, a black rubber cover was also issued to protect it from bad weather. It was common practice to make the hat directly from rubber to avoid having to put the cover on and take it off. However, the uniform regulation of 1943 still referred to two versions: the dress hat and the everyday hat, with the second requiring a perfectly fitted rubber cover.
