Różówka is one of twelve bottles of vodka prepared by the artist during her stay in Toruń (autumn 2010). The project was part of CoCA’s residential programme called This trip will change your art and educational project A Subjective Map of Toruń in cooperation with Fabryka UTU. Distilled in a factory in Toruń, the vodka’s recipe comes from the artist’s grandfather – Samuel Treister (1864–1942). At the end of the 19th century, Samuel Treister, along with his brother Józef, opened a distillery in the small town of Dębno in Galicia, where they produced a wide range of exclusive alcohols, from whisky to flavoured vodkas, including różówka – a vodka based on a traditional, Polish Jewish recipe combining the flavours of rose and lemon. On the basis of this recipe, which her father, living in the UK since the 1940s, gave her, the artist recreated the unusual flavour, re-establishing vodka as a work of art. [P. Lisowski]
