Coming from a Lisbon workshop, Simão Rodrigues is considered to have been the most characteristic and the most active of the painters from the last generation of the Portuguese mannerist artists of the Counter Reformation, producing a body of work that has made him one of the leading artists in this context.
In the painting of the Holy Family, the Virgin and Child establish a pyramid-shaped composition, relegating the figure of St. Joseph to a secondary position in the background. The composition is balanced by the pillar wrapped in scarlet drapery.
