The pilot house held Intrepid’s primary steering controls. Sailors turned the wheel to change the direction of the ship. They used the engine order telegraph (at right in this photograph) to communicate orders about the ship’s speed to men in the engine room. Various instruments allowed crew members to monitor Intrepid’s speed and course.
