Saint Cecile

Master of Santa Anastasia

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

The most famous of this group of statues, for the iconography and details of the costume, is the most difficult to evaluate because of 19th century restorations that remodelled major parts like the face and braid, as well as more marginal ones like the base. The hand and arm holding the small portable organ are later additions – the stone actually comes from a different quarry – making the original identity of the saint uncertain. In this case the scraping and remodelling of the surface of the stone has been sufficiently abrasive to eliminate all trace of the polychromy.
