Giovanni di Balduccio from Pisa
(documented from 1318 to 1349) was one of the notable sculptors active in Milan
in the fourteenth century. The artist was involved in a
series of important projects, such as the tabernacles of the city gates, to
which the statue of Saint Eustorgio was destined. We know that this statue was not made by
Giovanni di Balduccio himself, but by one of his assistants – his own statues are
recognisable for the quality of their design and execution and for the original
way in which they are made.
